About TRC Co.
How it started...

Creation of all sorts has always played an important role in my life, so jumping into making things with my hands seemed like a natural next step after finding myself suddenly unemployed from three different jobs. I was already making most of the things I would gift to others so... widening my audience and making these creations more accessible was an exciting prospect. Trash Rich Craft Company was created in 2020 after loosing multiple jobs as a result of the pandemic. It began with commissioned hats and eventually a sweater made for my sister... and once that first garment was created I hit the ground running! Or... more accurately, experimenting, altering, and creating at a larger scale. Eventually I realized if I wanted to keep crafting these unique items I would need to change my business model (which had really been non existent) and expand my audience. That's when TRC Co. really started to bloom...

How it's going...

After making more hats than I remember and sourcing my materials in mostly traditional ways, I started to notice the waste I was producing. This inspired research into the waste within the entire fashion industry and the big shift for TRC Co. occurred. It became clear that there were ways to make more sustainably, and ways to reduce waste creation within my own practices. I started sourcing my materials second hand from thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales and others. I opened the company up to clothing and fabric donation and started offering credit toward products for items donated. In 2023 TRC Co. started to participate in farmers markets in its home state of Vermont, completing both a summer and winter season. We began our Instagram and started this website! As I continue to build this company I am seizing opportunities for community building through art and collaborative creation. In the start of 2024 TRC Co. will be working with a local dance school to sponsor an alien themed kids camp and teach a costume and prop creation workshop. I'm looking forward to seeing how TRC Co. continues to grow and expand... but for now I'll say- there is so much making to be done, so much art of all kinds to be made. Support artists, support handmade, slow made, upcycled work, and get out there and create things with your friends!

How to care for the new to you TRC Co. items!

At TRC Co. we want our items to be well loved! Used! Lived in, or looked at! Admired, but not feared. Things should have an exciting life! We've tried to upcycle these items to give them a second chance... and that's where you come in! When you purchase something from us we hope you treat it with respect, but know that we do our best to make them to last! Many of our items appear more delicate than they are. With that being said, adventure hard and live your lives! Please reach out if something breaks or if you would like to speak about repairs. Or! if our things endure something epic- let us know that too! While you are living in a Trash Rich style, you can care for the items a few ways! If your purchase contains yarns sensitive to being machine washed we advise hand washing. Most of our items can be washed in a garment bag, or a pillow case though. Dry the delicate things by laying them flat on a towel. We aim to send more personalized care instructions with each item, but if you have specific questions please do reach out.

...and a little about Julia (TRC Co.'s creator) too
Julia is currently living a Trash Rich lifestyle in a tiny house on wheels in Vermont. She built the house herself, on the back of an old u-haul, using as many upcycled and secondhand materials as she could source. In addition to constantly building or crafting something... Julia spends her time flavor obsessed, always experimenting in any kitchen someone is willing to share. She has a deep love of the outdoors and nature, of movement and travel, of writing and the power of words. Before making the hats, Julia wore many of them- as everything from a chef and baker to a stone mason. Currently, Julia is an aerial silks student and teacher at Murmurations Aerial Dance. She dabbles with handbalancing, acro yoga, ground dance and contortion. The commonality always being creation, and positions that encouraged making. Combining all of these skill sets, Julia aims to finish her tiny home, build another (even smaller....) micro house that can double as a vending machine- and take TRC Co. on the road! Looking for inspiration from new making techniques and a wider variety of garbage materials... keep your eyes open for what's next!
